In space, nobody can hear your music pumping, so turn it up loud!

Starbound is a rules-lite TTRPG about cruising around the solar system in a junker ship and taking on dangerous odd jobs to make enough cash to upgrade your ride. Using the Viator game engine and taking inspiration from Star Wars and Destiny, Starbound is a game about causing trouble, running from the cops, and vibing with your friends among the stars.

Starbound contains:

  • The one-page core rules, along with some extra explanation and advice for the GM,
  • Rules for owning, maintaining, upgrading, and using a spaceship of your very own,
  • Lore information on the three different regions of the solar system: the Inner Planets, the Outer Planets, and the Asteroid Belt,
  • A different location builder for each region that matches the kind of events and threats you may encounter in that area,
  • Optional rules for hacking and money,
  • And four job generation tables that can create plot hooks for the Four S jobs: Shooting, Stealing, Smuggling, and Salvaging.
Complexity?3/5Most of the rules complexity comes from owning, using, and leveling up your spaceship. Gameplay outside of the ship is your standard Viator experience.
Game length?4/5Leveling up your ship can take a LOT of XP, and reaching max level for any of its Traits can take dozens of sessions. The setting is also pretty good for one-shots too, if you don't want to worry about ship rules and repairs!
Seriousness?2/5Space can get pretty weird, and with very few consequences that follow you past the atmosphere, there's nothing stopping you from getting silly with it.
GM work?2/5The game has random tables for locations, four different types of jobs, and NPCs that can be used as the base for countless stories with very little extra fluff work by the GM.

Why are there two games? All Viator games come with two documents: the main game and the Player Guide. The main document (Starbound.pdf) is the full game, and it has all the relevant info about the setting, rules, and GM tools and advice. The Player Guide is a two page document that contains that overview for the setting and all of the rules that players need to create a character and start rolling dice. You can print it out double sided, and then you have everything that new or inexperienced players need to start playing, all on one piece of paper!

What do I need to play? Just the provided document and a couple of six-sided dice!

Is there any AI in this game? No, every single idea, word, and rule came from my own human brain. However, I did use AI while making this game to review and critique my writing. I won't blame you if you take issue with that, just wanted to be clear about my AI usage.

What if I want more Viator? Check out the other games below, or on my page viator.itch.io, all available for free! Between the various 1e settings that need updating and other new ideas for 2e, Viator's game catalogue will only expand as time goes on, so there will always be something to play!
